A smaller PDF, still a document
Optimize PDF structure and embedded images locally. Text, vectors and page content stay in the document; no whole-page rasterization is used.
Compress creates a separate output. Keep the original and check the result before sharing the smaller copy.
How to compress a PDF
- Choose your PDF
Open a file and check its original size.
- Choose a target or quality
Use a maximum file size for an upload requirement. Use quality mode when detail matters more than a particular number.
- Preview the result
Compare the output and check the details that matter.
- Download the smaller copy
Save the output when it looks right. Keep the source if you may edit it again.
Keep the document structure
Use 100% quality for structural optimization only, or a lower quality to recompress eligible images. PDF pages are not rebuilt as JPEGs. Complex documents should be reviewed after export.
Compress under an upload limit
Choose KB or MB, or use a common size preset. 1 MB equals 1,000 KB here. The target applies to each file in a batch; check the actual downloaded size before uploading elsewhere.
Set a maximum size and check the actual exported file. Some files are already efficient and cannot meet a very small limit without changing their content.
If the result is still too large, try a lower quality or keep the original.
Leave some room below the receiving service’s limit. Its current upload rules and any attachment overhead may affect what is accepted.
PDF compatibility
Signed, encrypted and XFA PDFs are rejected. PDF/A, PDF/UA, complex layers and unusual color spaces have not been certified. Review the output in your usual PDF reader.
PDF compression questions
Compression guides
Compress a scanned PDF
Scanned pages often contain large images. Lower quality can recompress eligible embedded images while the PDF remains a document. Check small text, stamps and diagrams in your usual PDF reader.
Keep searchable text and vectors
Use 100% quality for structural optimization only. Existing text stays text; image-only scans do not gain searchable text because this tool does not perform OCR.
Prepare a PDF for submission
Set a target below the portal’s limit, then check the exported size, page count, links and forms. Already optimized documents may stay above a tight limit. Signed and encrypted PDFs are not accepted.
